6 Food Trends You Can Find Everywhere

Food, glorious food. Humans have evolved and, as such, food is no longer something that we use to fuel our bodies. It’s an art form. Combining ingredients to create a medley of textures and bursts of flavour that reach deep into our soul and paint our emotions. It’s an expression and one that we have learnt to enjoy both socially or alone either in the comfort of our own homes or out on the town.

There is nothing quite like a home-cooked meal or trying out that new Korean restaurant that has opened in your neighbourhood. In fact, food can be as fashionable as the newest season’s clothes and accessories that we see splashed on the pages of the latest edition of our favourite fashion magazines. We now have food trends that reach the furthest corners of the globe and are so popular that they are here to stay. So, what are some popular food trends that you can find everywhere?

Hot Pot Hype

Hot Pots have been around for centuries, and they are definitely here to stay. The perfect fusion of that home-cooked experience with a much-welcomed change in atmosphere that means you don’t have to do the dishes. Hot Pots are a tasty solution to many food concerns we find ourselves presented with in the 21st century, and a great experience for every diner – young or old.

Hot Pot is exactly what it sounds like – a hot pot. Filled with a piping hot soup base, you can cook your ingredients by immersing them in the bubbling liquid for a few minutes, and voila! A healthy meal that can be enjoyed by all. Whether you be vegetarian, vegan, or a meat-lover, Hot Pot has you covered by providing succulent slivers of beef, pork, seafood, tofu, noodles, and a wide variety of vegetables. It really is a fun and healthy option for your next meal!

Charcuterie Charm

Charcuterie, much like Hot Pot, gives you choices and the opportunity to select what you want to be included in, and this is what adds to the charm of this trend. It’s an experience that tantalises more than just the tastebuds. It’s a visual art form that includes all of your favourite foods on a selection board to be shared and enjoyed with your closest crew. Traditionally, Charcuterie, being the French word for ‘delicatessen, is a board filled with meats, cheeses, crackers, dips, slices of bread, pates, and terrines, the modern charcuterie has transformed into a board of selected foods for any occasion. In fact, breakfast, lunch, dinner, and even dessert charcuterie is gaining popularity as people start to get inventive by providing their dinner guests with a snack-board selection of choices.

More Fresh, Less Fake

The whole world is riding a health wave these days, and this is definitely driving the food trends we are now experiencing. Gone are the days when we bought our food with little thought as to where it came from or how it was made. Now, we are demanding freshness. The kind of freshness you would get if you picked the ingredients from your own back garden - that ‘farm to table’ experience. This could be contributing to the rise in trends like Hot Pot as well, but people seem to want to remove the illusion surrounding what goes into their bodies, so they can be healthy and happy from the inside out.

Plant-based Pandemic

Following on from the climate change call to action of the last 3 years has been a big increase in plant-based options. As the climate crisis becomes more pressing, people around the world have been compelled to make the switch to either full-time or part-time vegetarianism and veganism in a bid to do their part to tackle the issue. This has led to a variety of options now being added to menu and supermarket choices, such as plant-based dairy, meats, and even burgers from your favourite fast-food joint.

Virtual Cooking Gone Viral

Amidst the lockdowns many countries experienced during 2020 arose a food trend nobody saw coming – the virtual cooking class. Because we all had so much time on our hands, many of us chose to spend a lot of our time in the kitchen cooking up a storm with the help of professionals and amateurs around the world. Without the pressure of other people there to judge the creation, it seems many of us found solace in cooking that we never thought we could, or would, attain. Now, despite some countries reaching a more post-pandemic plateau and waking from their pandemic slumber, the virtual cooking classes seem like they are here to stay. Why not learn how to make your own pasta from a real Italian grandma? Nobody said she had to be your grandma, right!

Takeaway is Taking Over

Another response to the pandemic has been takeaway. Pre-pandemic, it would have been a social no-no to request cocktails to be delivered with your Friday-night curry or ask for a Michelin-star meal to be boxed to go. But now, nobody would bat an eyelid, and this has opened a whole new line of options on the food landscape. These days you can have almost anything you want to be prepared for takeaway whether it be fish and chips from the local seafood store, a high-end burger (wrapped in gold of course) from the five-star hotel on the other side of town and an espresso martini to wash it down. Where there is a will, there is a way!

Food is more than just a fad, so get out there and find joy in the food you put into your temple!
